You can’t complain about something, unless you’ve tried to fix it!

This simple phrase became the cornerstone of my perspective — a call to action, a reminder that citizenship is more than criticism. It is engagement, responsibility, and courage to shape the future. Freedom Sam, as an idea, was born from this ethos: to stand up, to participate, and to commit to the ongoing experiment of our democracy. In this spirit, Freedom Sam is not just an emblem of principles; it is an invitation to join in the work of achieving our ideals. Freedom Sam is a way of living that insists upon truth, integrity, and enduring belief that together, through participation and respect, we can safeguard the promise of liberty for all.

For me personally, the concepts represented by Freedom Sam came into play early in my life. As a youngster, growing up on a farm, I learned quickly to make the best of what was available. I repaired buildings, roofed others, and painted the house, barn, and outbuildings. At school, I was engaged in sports, the student council, and was class president all four years.

Following my dream in college to play professional baseball, the Minnesota Twins flew me up to Minneapolis for a tryout. I learned baseball was not in my future, they suggested I go to graduate school — which I did. Completing a Doctor of Education, I was on my way to becoming a “change agent,” instituting meaningful change as a Dean, Provost, and University President. Along with this came articles, books, guest opinions, and letters to the editor — all focused on making improvements on whatever was the challenge of the day.

Now in retirement, there is another challenge I must address. Whether successful or not, I must try to influence the 2026 election. The President is off base, and his power must be reduced. And so, I have dedicated the months ahead to making a difference.

With Freedom Sam in the forefront, I’m hopeful I can have a role in getting people of reason elected to office. And, once again, I can enjoy life, the American way!
